SSL Certificate
A digital certificate that authenticates a website’s identity and encrypts information sent to the server. SSL certificates are essential for securing sensitive data like passwords and payment information.
While SSL is the widely used term, the technology has been largely replaced by TLS (Transport Layer Security), which is more secure and efficient. However, the term “SSL” remains in common use to refer to the certificates and protocols for secure connections.
How SSL Certificates Work
- Handshake: When a user accesses a website, the browser and server establish a connection through a process called the SSL/TLS handshake. During this handshake, they share encryption keys and verify each other’s identities.
